I usually write reviews and rate each story in an anthology but that would be very unfair here, so below you can find what I understood and felt while reading the stories of these amazing and strong women. It’s an extremely powerful collection of essays and I was amazed by how much of myself I saw in these very personal stories - it helped me feel a little less alone and maybe the next time I feel angry, I might decide to react differently. These 22 women share their devastating and profound and diverse and real stories of feeling angry, suppressing it, suffering because of it and finally reclaiming it so that they could decide how they wanted to express their rage. Hence, this book is something that I really needed to read. Even now, it’s not an easy emotion for me to reconcile with but I also don’t know what to do with all the rage I sometimes feel. But later on in my life, when I started to show my anger in explosive ways especially during some particular depressive episodes, it was always accompanied by a feeling of shame that I had allowed myself to feel that anger. And I was very happy when I got the ARC.Īnger is something that I was proud of not feeling in my younger days, even more so because I was appreciated for being a well behaved girl. When I first found out about this book, it was almost a visceral reaction that I HAD to read it. David, stranded with a few tourists and out-of-towners and a handful of familiar faces, one or two army personnel and the supermarket staff suddenly has a situation on his hands and a supermarket full of scared and desperate people. When a town resident comes bursting into the market, bleeding and screaming about monsters in the mist it doesn't take long for order to descend into chaos. While David and Billy are in the supermarket queue the mist rolls in, but it seems unnaturally thick, otherworldly in its slow pace, its swallowing up of sounds and straight lines, and it reduces visibility to 0%. Canned goods and orderly queues, bottled water and patience. To begin with it's emergency protocol as usual. He leaves his wife at home picking her way through the wrecked plot and the damaged house, taking his son Billy and his cantankerous neighbour Brent Norton with him as a gesture of neighbourliness after a previous property dispute. He can see the mist rolling in from the other side of the lake and wants to be prepared. Commercial artist David Drayton, one of the town's longest standing residents decides to head into town to stock up on emergency supplies for what he assumes is an approaching weather front. Following a particularly violent summer storm the small lakeside community of Bridgton, Maine is bracing itself for more unusual weather. The conflict of the story is between characters. Emily is definatley a round character, because she goes through the change of becoming a better sister at the end of the book as well as a friend. The setting of this story is set through the immediate social group. The story shows how much Emily's little sister gets on her nerves and also how the class is taking a field trip which helps lead to the setting of Washington, D.C. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. She gets a gift for her little sister Stacy and even helps her partner that she didnt want to be paired with by getting him a gift. As the trip goes on Emily realizes that she misses being home. Once they are in Washington D.C she gets paired up with someone who she doesnt want to be paired up with. Then she realizes she forgot to bring a diary like everyone else. At first Emily has to sit by a girl on the train who she doen't like very much. There is a girl in the class named Emily Arrow who can hardly wait because she never been there and she can't wait to get away from her little sister Stacy. The book was about a class that is taught by Ms. The book "Look Out, Washington, D.C.!" by Patricia Reilly Giff was a very good book. In “Lorna Simpson Collages” American photographer and multimedia artist Lorna Simpson blends nostalgia and the wonders of the natural world to offer a mesmerizing meditation on blackness, feminine beauty, and the majesty of unconquerable coifs.Ĭlippings of vintage advertising images of black men and women overlay geologic formations, celestial arrays and swirling watercolors to stunning effect. It was through such meanderings that I happened upon what has become one of my favorite books of the past year. The whimsical nature of exploration for its own sake yields an intimate knowledge of a library’s collection that could not otherwise be known, and perhaps, in smaller measure, a more intimate knowledge of ourselves as we discover what animates and calls to us from between the pages of static text. But there is something to be said about the simple pleasure of wandering the stacks. To be sure, I have encountered many wonderful new books this way and am confident such resources will continue to be useful tools of discovery. These are all valuable resources to have at hand when the question of “What should I read next?” comes to mind. As a library professional, much of what I read these days comes to me by way of peer recommendations and the pointed study of curated book reviews, blogs and sundry annual “noteworthy” and “best of” lists. The hearing not only showcased the willingness of industry leaders to engage in discussions on regulation but also demonstrated the need for a balanced approach to avoid stifling innovation. This was a unique approach, as historically, US companies have tried their hardest to avoid regulation. The speakers openly addressed potential risks of AI technology and emphasized the need for precision regulation. The discussion was particularly interesting due to its timing, as it followed the recent release of the EU's proposed AI Act, which could potentially ban American companies like OpenAI and Google from providing API access to generative AI models and impose massive fines for non-compliance. In a historic and candid Senate hearing, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Professor Gary Marcus, and IBM's Christina Montgomery discussed the regulatory landscape of AI in the US. In 2016, presidential candidate Donald Trump declared: "I think the big problem this country has is being politically correct." Reeling from his victory, Democrats blamed the corrosive effect of "identity politics." When banned from Twitter for inciting violence, Trump and his supporters claimed that the measure was an assault on "free speech." In We Need New Stories, Nesrine Malik explains that all of these arguments are political myths-variations on the lie that American values are under assault.Įxploring how these and other common political myths function, she breaks down how they are employed to subvert calls for equality from historically disenfranchised groups. A rigorous examination of six political myths used to deflect and discredit demands for social justice. "The better Telgemeier's books sell, the less hand-wringing to do over the next generation.
